Character Background:
Shuu was born "Isa Souta", although he later changed his name. Not much is known of his childhood, although his intelligence seemed to catch the eye of the Hawk Party, one of the two main political parties of the Bird Nation. Despite being a partridge, Isa managed to become the apprentice to one of the world's most esteemed researchers, Ryuuji Kawara. Despite the fact that Ryuuji irritated him at times and interrupted his work, Isa admired him and his work greatly. He was reluctant to share his feelings of admiration towards his mentor - after all, why would his feelings matter? It was the research that was important.
Unfortunately, Ryuuji became ill and requested that his apprentice promise him to fulfill fatherly duties towards his only son, Ryouta. With the bird he looked up to on his deathbed, Isa had no choice but to agree to it, binding the spoken contract that he would do all he could in his power to make Ryouta's dreams come true. After Ryuuji's death, Isa changed. He was even more detached from the world, immersing himself in his research, infuriated by the fact that his mentor still left a challenge for him beyond the grave.
One day, as he was passing by an orphanage that had been attacked by a group of human radicals, Isa noticed a small bird with a young girl. He recognized the boy's name; it was Ryouta. At long last, he would be able to ask him what his wish was and do what he could to fulfill it. He proceeded to ask Ryouta what his wish was. The small bird answered that he wished for there to be a world where birds and humans could live in peace. At that moment, Isa swore he would make that dream become a reality.
Unfortunately, Isa was not all right in the head; he had displayed apathy towards those he cared about and had no qualms about performing controversial - and sometimes illegal - experiments. He decided that the only way humans and birds would ever live in peace would be if the humans were eradicated completely. Years passed as Isa's research went through extensive trial and error, and he lost some of the funding needed to carry out his work, although his sole beneficiaries, the Hawk Party, continued their support.
He was hired at St. PigeoNation's Institute, a school that was working towards positive human and bird relations, as the head doctor of the medical center. Peace, however, was merely the Hawk Party's front. In actuality, St. PigeoNation's was a cover-up for Isa to continue his work on developing a biological weapon.
One day, a colleage of his mentioned that a strange young bird had been brought to his clinic. A very frail, quiet bird, with a strange medical condition he had never seen before. Isa saw this as an opportunity, and convinced the staff of St. PigeoNation's Institute to invite the young bird to the school so he might continue his research. They agreed.
Nageki was moved to the medical center where Isa gave him all sorts of different pharmaceutical drugs. Instead of curing Nageki, like Isa reassured him he was, he was actually turning the young bird into a living, breathing, biological weapon, using the chemicals to assault his immune system and create a virus that would wipe all humanity out. At long last, the Charon Virus was created. They performed many tests, bringing in humans who, after only being exposed to Nageki for three to four minutes, soon found themselves going into asphyxiatic shock and dying. Isa was exultant - he had finally done it! He was mere steps away from making Ryouta's dream a reality!
Nageki wasn't stupid, however. He knew what he was doing to people, and decided to take fate into his own hands. He set the medical center on fire, committing suicide and destroying all of Isa's years of hidden research. Isa injured his right side and wing severely while trying to salvage some of his notes, but the smoke became too great and he had to abandon his hard work. After the flames died down, Isa returned in desperation, and salvaged what little he could of what was left of Nageki's corpse, hoping against all hope that the virus still festered inside his remains.
With the medical center no longer in use, Isa changed his name to "Shuu Iwamine" and became the school's doctor, working on the now defunct project on his own. Ever since the fire, Shuu was forced to be left-handed, and was unable to lift heavy objects or perform hard labor.
When Ryouta grew older, he arrived at the school and word of his fragile immune system reached Shuu. He knew that he could create the Charon Virus once again. He gave Ryouta all sorts of medication, adding tiny bits of Nageki's tissue to the medicine. Before long, the virus had attached itself inside Ryouta's liver, flowing throughout his body, and it was time to test the virus once again.
Ryouta unwittingly killed his best friend, Hiyoko Tousaka, with the Charon Virus. Due to the medicine Shuu had given him, Ryouta was too disoriented to remember what had happened, let alone realize what he had done. With his assistant, Yuuya's, help, Shuu divided her body into pieces, putting them into boxes and stashing them in the teacher's lounge to be retrieved later. However, in Shuu's preoccupation of his success he forgot one critical thing: Hiyoko Tousaka was the Human Representative, the Bird Nation's last chance at finding peace with humans. The Dove and Hawk party founded the school; the Dove party truly believed that the Institute was for peace. To allow the humans some kind of comfort, all three parties agreed to this: If Hiyoko died, the principal was forced to activate a giant dome to keep all of the birds inside until the human military moved in to massacre all the birds in retaliation.
The boxes were unwittingly brought to each of the classrooms before Shuu and Yuuya had time to move them to a better location. With Hiyoko's corpse discovered, the principal did what he must. Unsure of what to do, Shuu poisoned the principal in the hopes of giving Ryouta more time to remember what he had done.
It wasn't too long before Ryouta and the other students began to suspect that Shuu wasn't being entirely truthful, and he was confronted by one of his students, Sakuya. Not willing to let all of his hard work go to waste, Shuu attacked the young dove, only to be stopped by Yuuya. Yuuya sacrificed himself to save his younger brother, but not before Shuu managed to run away to the basement of the medical center. He was followed by a frightening mechanical monster he referred to as Route 9. When Shuu and Yuuya had dismembered Hiyoko's corpse, the doctor had managed to preserve her brain and built her a grotesque mechanical body. She was assisting him, although bits and pieces of her personality remained. Unfortunately, the others didn't realize this, and killed the monster, thus, killing Hiyoko not once, but twice.
Being confronted about his evil deeds, Shuu finally confessed, managing to draw Ryouta away from the others. He explained his goal, and that all he was doing was for Ryouta's sake, to fulfill the challenge Ryuuji had left for him. He had nearly convinced Ryouta to submit and exterminate all of humanity, when Ryouta's friends arrived, snapping him out of it. Realizing he had nowhere else to run, Shuu admitted defeat and submission. He was gravely injured when one of his colleagues, a teacher by the name of Nanaki, pulled a gun on him and shot him several times.
Nanaki revealed himself to be Nageki's older brother, and sought revenge against Shuu for his crimes. After much coaxing, Nanaki finally calmed down long enough to decide that the law should mete out suitable punishment. At long last, they had managed to find an escape route out of the dome, freeing the students and allowing them to escape before the humans entered and killed them all.
Abilites/Special Powers: Shuu is highly intelligent for a partridge, and can move very quietly. Few can sense his presence before he speaks. Due to severe injuries on his right side, Shuu uses his left hand, and is quite proficient with a blade.
Third-Person Sample:
Shuu had done all he could, and now it was over. As he stared at the barrel of the gun pointed at his head, he resisted the urge to laugh. Aren't you supposed to see your life flash before your eyes? he thought in bemusement. Unfortunately, there was nothing. Nothing but the tinge of regret he felt for not being able to keep his promise. His eyes darted to Ryouta. He looked so scared, so shocked, so fragile. A perfect specimen. A perfect weapon. There he was, the future of his race, his species, and yet all he could do was declare over and over that this was not what he had wished for. How was I supposed to know? Shuu thought critically. I'm not a mind reader, and prejudice is inherited. Hiyoko must have clouded his young mind with peace and love...
Hiyoko. A strange pang surged throughout his chest at the thought of the human girl. She had helped out in the infirmary a few times, and her cheerfulness had always been irritating. The memory of her beaming face started to make him feel sick. And the words she had uttered - her expression demure, her eyes gazing up at him through lowered lashes, her cheeks flushing slightly - when he asked her why she was at his office during her break rang through his ears: "To hear your voice." His body began to tremble, and his eyes widened in a shocking realization. He could have just let her dismembered corpse be. In fact, he should have. Thinking back on it now, there were a lot of things he could have done differently, but...he had preserved her brain. It was a desperate attempt to save the girl who was the victim of his work. Sure, the body he had constructed was nothing but metal and rough burlap, but a part of him had wanted to keep that smile, all for himself, almost as desperately as he wanted Ryouta to go out and spread his disease to the world before dying.
As quickly as these thoughts came, they were gone. His eyes once again retained their cold and icy demeanor, and he gazed up at the quail before him in defiance. Fine. Everything he had worked towards was dead and destroyed. It was over. His entire purpose for being was dashed, and there was nothing left. He closed his eyes and willed the bullet to sear through his skull and end all of it, but it never came.
Perhaps...perhaps this was the most fitting punishment of all.
First-Person Sample:
[The partridge lies on the ground, motionless. He's about the size of a large turkey, and his left side is covered in blood, staining his feathers red. The drip of blood hitting the frozen ground slowly draws Shuu out of unconsciousness, dragging him up through the water of oblivion.
His eyes flutter, and a soft groan escapes his beak. He slowly tries to sit up, but finds himself too weak to do so.]
Where...where am I?
[He turns his face to look around. He's on the outskirts of a large forest. He cannot see too far ahead of him with the drifting snowflakes, but a large looming shadow is in the far distance. Is it the school? Only one way to find out.
[He tilts his head upwards, only to see wide, open sky.]
The dome...it's gone. Did everyone escape?
[He tries to move again, but all it does is make him wince in pain. He can't see anyone. This can't be St. PigeoNation's. Nanaki and Sakuya wouldn't dare to let him out of their sight, and they are nowhere to be found. If he is not there, then...]
I'm free.
[The laugh starts out softly, then slowly grows in volume.]
Hohohoho....hohohoho....hahahahaha....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
[Shuu begins to scream at the sky in delirium - the blood loss affecting his mental state severely.]
DO YOU SEE ME, RYUUJI?! CAN YOU SEE ME HIYOKO?! I am ALIVE! THERE IS NO ONE TO STOP ME NOW! You just watch...!!!! I WILL keep my promise!!!!!
[He begins to laugh again, but it is soon interrupted by a hacking cough. It grows in intensity, and his eyes roll into the back of his head before he passes out once more.]
